Beyond Wynwood: Little Haiti and PAMM

Miami's art scene doesn't end at the Wynwood gates. Little Haiti's studios and PAMM's bayfront galleries tell a fuller story.

Wynwood gets the postcard shots, but some of Miami's most meaningful art happens a few miles away, in neighborhoods and museums that don't need a mural to prove their creative credentials.

Little Haiti's living studios

Little Haiti is the cultural heart of Miami's Haitian diaspora, and its art runs deep. The painter Edouard Duval-Carrié settled there in the early 1990s and has kept his studio in the neighborhood ever since, drawn by the Creole on the streets and the feeling of a piece of Haiti in Miami.

That sense of place is what the 2024 exhibition "I Am Little Haiti" set out to capture. Curated by photojournalist Carl Juste with Florida International University, it combined paintings, photography, essays and video to document the neighborhood's identity under growing pressure from gentrification.

A neighborhood's art can be a warning and a love letter at the same time.

PAMM: from gap to flagship

Pérez Art Museum Miami traces its roots to 1984, founded to fill a gap in a young city with no contemporary art museum. It later became a collecting institution, with a mission shaped around Miami's diversity.

In 2013 it moved into its bayfront building in Museum Park, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and famous for its hanging gardens that sway above the terrace.

Two Miamis, one story

Where Wynwood sells spectacle, Little Haiti and PAMM offer something slower: a museum built to mirror Miami-Dade, and a neighborhood whose art is less about tourists and more about memory. Seeing both is the difference between visiting Miami's art scene and understanding it.
