Every December, Miami fills with pop-up galleries, packed parties and a level of art-world chatter usually reserved for Venice. That's because it is, quite literally, Basel's doing.

From Switzerland to South Beach

Art Basel began in Switzerland in 1970, founded by gallerists including Ernst Beyeler, and quickly became one of the most important art fairs in the world.

Miami entered the picture with help from local collectors, among them Don and Mera Rubell, whose collection already lived in a Wynwood warehouse. They helped persuade the fair's organizers that Miami deserved an edition of its own.

It took a few determined collectors to convince an entire art world to fly south.

A delayed debut

The first Miami fair was planned for 2001 but postponed after the September 11 attacks. It finally opened in December 2002 with around 160 galleries, and it has grown enormously since, now bringing in well over 250 galleries from dozens of countries.

It's not just one fair anymore

What started as a single fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center has ballooned into Miami Art Week: satellite fairs, museum openings, private collection tours and parties across the city. Critics have long grumbled about its commercial excess and celebrity scene, but love it or roll your eyes, it anchors Miami's art calendar.

How to actually do it

If the main fair's ticket feels steep, treat Art Week as a citywide open house instead. Wynwood's galleries, the Rubell Museum and PAMM all time major exhibitions to the same week, and many satellite fairs cost less to enter.
